Naval Base Photos Approved For Public Distribution

My photographs of a 1898 building at the Naval Base Kitsap – Bremerton have been approved for public distribution.  They are being submitted to the Historic American Building Survey (HABS) at the Library of Congress. Building 58 is a long maintenance building that is adjacent to Dry Dock 1.  The plan is to demolish the building to make room for a larger dry dock. This is in the “Controlled Industrial Area” (CIA) of the Naval Base, so we had to be careful not include sensitive items in the photos.  I had two very patient security officers with me as I slowly documented the building with my 4×5 camera.  I was working as a subcontractor to Richaven Architecture and Preservation, which is doing the HABS submittal. Tompco is the general contractor on the project.  They were very helpful on getting a huge crane to back off so that I could photograph more of the building.

West façade, looking east from across Dry Dock 1.
Building interior, looking northeast.
Second-story interior along the west side, looking south. Note the shiplap interior
wall, tongue-in-groove ceiling, and masonry exterior wall with original windows.
